Below are some critical reviews about Gama Bikes City Avenue Step ThroughLittle bit frustrating when your kid pays decent $$$ for a bike, has you put it together, and it's not ready to ride. For those of you that speak bike lingo, the hanger was bent when it arrived and the bike wouldn't properly shift to all gears. Luckily I have a buddy working at a bike shop and he was able to take care of it for me; cost me $40 but it's better than shipping it back and waiting on a new bike. Front fender arrived damaged as well so I had to straighten it out a little bit.
The tires tubes had to be replaced with a more quality tube because during the first ride they popped.
I didn't receive all the things needed to assemble the bike properly. Specifically the bolt to attach the front fender is missing.

My wife wanted a step-through cruiser, and she liked the looks and features of this bike. I thought the 6 speeds was a good idea because of the hills in our area. Since it was priced well below similar models from other manufacturers and shipping was free with Amazon Prime, I decided to risk buying a product which was new to Amazon and thus had no reviews. I could find no significant information about the product online, probably because this was a new company and this was it's first product. I was aware it was made in China. Having now had the bike for 1 week, I will try to give a fair account on my view of the pros and cons of this product.The bicycle arrived on time in a large box, which I dragged to the assembly spot in my garage, having assumed that assembly was required. The frame comes partially assembled with the front sprocket, rear wheel, rear fender, rear brakes, cassette and Shimano derailleur in place. The front brake handles and cables are pre-assemled on the handlebar, as well as the 6 speed Shimano shifter and cable. All other required components were included. Assembly require an adjustable wrench or 8,10,13,and 15mm spanners, a Phillips screwdriver and 2.5, 5 and 6 mm Allen wrenches.The instruction manual and illustrations are bare-boned but adequate for a fairly straightforward assembly. As mentionred above, a good part of the bike was pre-assembled. The stem, handlebar, seat post, front fender, saddle, seat post, front wheel and pedals were sturdy, fit well and could be securely fastened. Assembling the basic parts for the bicycle to be functional took 2 hours. Adjusting the brakes took anothe 30 minutes, complicated by the fact that 2 of the small Allen heads of the brake tension screws were stripped. Attaching the basket ( had to modify the means of securing the bottom because the provided parts didn't work) and the bell and reflectors took abut 20 minutes. At this point, I looked for the warranty, found it on the last page of the manual. "Gamma Bikes.....warrants the frame and fork for life.........as long as the customer takes it to a professional to be built.....(!)....and other original components for ......30 days from the date of purchase". Okay then.Once I got the bike upright, I found that the kickstand was at too shallow of an angle to prevent the bike from falling over, so I bent it to correct the problem. Then I noticed for the first time that the position of the derailleur and it's clamp was preventing the rear axle to seat properly in the dropout by about 3/4 inch. This in spite of the illustration on page 6 of the manual of a properly and improperly seated wheel, the latter illustration having the words " No Good " This problem I cannot fix myself. Moving along, I noticed that the rear wheel was seriously out of round. I removed the wheel and took it to the local bike shop where it was discovered that the wheel itself was deformed, so it required more than just spoke adjustment to get it fairly true. $25 bill. I replaced the rear wheel and tightened it and then rode the bike in spite of the rear axle problem.The bike actually rode fine, seemed stable, turned well, braked and shifted well. My wife rode the bike and she loves it. For the past week she has ridden the bike a little every day and still loves it. If it did not have the above problems, she would give it 4 stars. I would probably agree because it is priced right. However, the placement of the rear drailleur and the position of the rear axle in the dropout makes me wonder whether or not this bike should be ridden in it's current configuration. I am still deciding what action to take to resolve this problem.Update: I will take the bike to a bike shop professional to get an expert opinion as to whether or not my safety concerns about the rear wheel are valid. Also, the small Allen brake adjustment screws were not stripped. I had used a 2mm rather then a 2.5 mm wrench. The screws work fine. Sometimes I don't.Update : The bike mechanic said the position of the rear axle in the dropout is not a problem. I see no reason not to agree with my wife and give her bike 4 stars.
Everything said is true about the bike. If I was CEO of company I would have better QA. the kick stand to long, no Manuel, brakes was way off and just a pain to solve. Ok why 4 stars. The bike rides so sweet. Bought one for wife and daughter wanted one. I did pull my hair out , but I solved all issues and the bikes ride great for the girls
My wife loves this bike and it is holding up great after a year of use. You need to be a good bike mechanic to assemble though...Cant go wrong with Shimano components.
