Below are some critical reviews about Schwinn Timber Mountain 24 Inch WheelsI bought this for a 9 year old and had a bike shop assemble it just to be safe. They commented on poor parts, etc but I blew them off, I figured a $200 bike is more than nice enough for my daughter's age. Well we've had multiple problems with the derailleurs not shifting properly or shifting rough which isn't exactly safe for a kid's bike and the bike shop can't get them adjusted right. Just recently the chain fell off the gear and onto the "chain guard?" after I was test riding it after it the bike shop worked on it a second time. Luckily it was me on the bike and not my daughter as I went from pedaling normally with resistance to zero resistance on the pedals very abruptly which is a dangerous situation especially for a kid. I really regret buying this bike, I'm into it for almost $300, past the amazon return date and I'll probably junk it and buy a better bike at a bike shop. I don't feel right about selling it or even leaving it at the curb as some other poor kid will eventually get it and potentially hurt themselves on it.Oh yeah, I called Schwinn and their only solution was to offer to send parts which I can pay to have a bike shop install but I'm done sinking more money into this thing. Also the guys at the bike shop said the design is terrible and even if they get it set right it won't last anyway.My advice is to go to a reputable bike shop and spend more money on a good bike or even a good used bike. Buy it a size big if you have to so they can grow into it and keep it longer. Please do not buy this trash or anything else like it.
I read many reviews about this bike. My wife wanted it, so i purchased it. Was simple to assemble. The handlebars sit way too low. The gears suck. They will not change appropriately and if you are caught in mid-gear, good luck trying to get it to gear up or down. Hands down I have never been more disappointed with a purchase. I will never buy a Schwinn again. I was going to get her a Trek and that is what I should have done. I hope the bike shop will give me a credit for this bike only ridden one time. This bike is not made to take on the bike paths of southeast michigan. Which is not rough terrain, just the bike literally sucks. if i could get a refund, i would.
Look, it's a $200 men's bike with mediocre reviews. I went into this with really low expectations. Even then, it fell short. In two minutes, here's why:First, out of the box, one of the rear brake pads was firmly against the wheel. I assumed I could adjust the assembly to loosen the stuck side; unfortunately, I loosened it as far as I could and it remained stuck to the wheel. The spring that operates the calipers was either out of spec or damaged during shipping. A quick call to Pacific Cycle's customer service department - which I have to say, is awesome - and they shipped out a new rear caliper assembly free of charge. (When the new rear assembly came a few days later, I installed it and it fixed the problem.)After finishing assembly of the bike, I loosened up the rear brake so that it allowed the wheel to spin (but was unusable), and took it out for a quick ride around the block. The chain fell (or more accurately, shot) off the sprockets every time I went into 1st or 2nd gear on the rear sprockets; 7th gear was unreachable. On the center sprockets, 1st gear chattered and 3rd gear was unreachable. Back home I went to make some more adjustments.After adjusting the rear derailleurs I can now access gears 1-6 on the rear sprocket (though it shows as gears 2-7 on the gear shift); if I shift into 1st gear it eventually comes off, though not as aggressively. In other words, I'm a gear short. On the center derailleurs I can get 1st - 3rd, though 3rd is tough to get into.I'm not a bike mechanic by any stretch. I am a moderately handy guy, and a casual bike rider. I suspect a bike shop could do a little better than me but I am not optimistic they would get it to 100% and frankly, I don't want to spend the money on getting it tuned.I wanted something "good enough" to get me a few years of decent use until I can afford something better or move on to another hobby. It will probably get me there, but it will be gimped and annoying. If I could do it again? I'd buy used, or save up a little longer to buy a ~$500 bike from a real bike shop.

I purchased this bike a little over six months ago and have put a handful of miles on it since then. It has held up quite well and is a solid bike given the price range. I am 6'2" and the bike is on the tall side of a good fit. My roommate, who also uses the bike occasionally, is 6'1" and it fits him about as well.My only real complaint is the front tire was damaged during shipping and arrived mildly warped. The damage was not enough to warrant me returning the bike, but it will mean the tire and breaks will wear faster than usual and eventually need to be replaced.Overall, the bike is precisely what I was looking for and has been a satisfying purchase.
We are loyal Schwinn users -- My 2 sons have thoroughly enjoyed previously purchased 24" Schwinn Thrasher mountain bikes from a LBS -- those Schwinn Thrashers have have been well used on family MTB vacations to Moab, Texas, Colorado, Wisconsin -- those Schwinn Thrashers have held up well for the 2 years before my sons out grew them.So when my sons out grew those 24" Schwinns, I bought 2 Schwinn High Timber 26" Mountain Bikes for this Christmas. These 26" Schwinn HIgh Timber mountain bikes are essentially the same components as the 24" Schwinn Thrasher (except those are V-brakes). We are now assembling these Christmas Gift bicycles and I'm encountering some things you should know about.The bikes are a good value BUT we got a bad freewheel on one of them -- the freewheel grinds (sounds metallic) even after oiling it.A phone call to Schwinn CUstomer SErvice and they told me they will ship a new freewheel by FedEx that I will receive in 5-7 days.That's Great.... 5 stars.SEPARATELY THOUGH..... you should know that any mail order bicycle will required assembly (which you probably knows) AND ADDITIONAL LUBRICATION & ADJUSTMENT.The following will need correction in addition to assembly:- disc brake caliper arm needs to be readjusted (two hex screws) so it doesn't bind- brake cable needs to be tightened so the brake lever doesn't fully compress (bottom-out) upon braking. The best way to do this is to tighten the cable at the caliper by loosening and re-tightening the hex screw.- wheel bearings on both front and rear hubs will need to be re-packed with grease and the race bearing cones correctly adjusted.- Rear Derailluer HIgh and Low Gear fine tuning adjustments.- Front Derailluer HIgh and Low Gear fine tuning adjustments.The headset and bottom brackets appear to have to be lightly packed also, but given they have significantly less rotation than the wheel hubs, it is OK to leave it alone.
It was easy to assemble...I have had bikes for many years but always bought from bike dealers who did all the work of assembly, fitting and balancing...due to the Covid 19 problems all my local bike dealers were closed or extremely busy with a long wait time...so I took a chance on this....so far so good......But the first time I took it out I did worry if it might fail completely in the middle of the road and fall apart due to any ineptitude on my putting it together. Not a problem....all I really did was mount the front wheel, the handle bars, adjust the chain a little, and the seat, and add a water bottle, .....it even came with the tires properly inflated.... I'm happy
