Below are some critical reviews about BAFANG Display Electric Conversion ChainringThis was relatively easy to install with the right tools and the motor is very powerful and quiet. However it takes a moment after the start of pedaling for the motor to engage and then there is a sudden surge in power. I had to abandon the use of the large sprocket in the back because the chain falls off the drive sprocket in front. Also the power connector for the motor is incompatible with the battery so you will probably have to order an anderson/xt60 adaptor ($7 at Amazon) to connect the anderson battery plug to the xt90 motor plug. Developed a controller problem after a month and the motor only runs for a few minutes before the system turns off.
It works, but before buying I watched some youtube video and it says that you can adjust assist levels the way you like. This is not the case at least for 860c display - you can only change btw 3, 5 or 9 levels. Even on 5 or 9 level 1 is too high and terribly set and it is not adjustable - it goes to 12mph with full power. And nowhere on product description it says that. I found that some variants of this display allows fine tuning, but that to seems a different firmware, this one they decided you do not need choice. Poor product.
To say this item is terribly designed is an understatement. There are parts, especially on the battery that are designed to be adjustable but in reality, there is no adjustment range because the two slotted parts must be in perfect alignment to fit the battery connector. Essentially, it feels like one person designed this, took 5 minutes and never had anyone check their work. There is so much crappy shortcut engineering in this entire kit.The parts that came are also not at all matching the ordered parts. Screws are mismatched (wrong threads, not matching instructions or previously ordered kits, etc.), adapter cables are ridiculously long, battery plate has wrong arrangement of mounting holes, etc.DO NOT BUY THIS unless you are really interested in spending days or weeks machining adapters, getting new screws, and generally reengineering the entire kit to fit. I would be embarrassed to work for this company.

Our kit had two faulty parts (Actually only one but we tried the easiest and least expensive fix first to no avail) and it took a couple weeks to get that sorted. But the support people were great and they shipped us replacement parts for the defective parts. They were shipped quickly and arrived in a few days. Communicating with them was easy and VERY productive. They stand behind their product for sure! My wife loves her eBike conversion and it even out performs my WAY more expensive eBike. Probably mostly due to the weight difference of the standard converted bike and my mine, PLUS my wife is 130 pounds lighter than I as well. She speeds up VERY steep hills now and the battery seems to last forever. IF you have the capacity to make such an involved upgrade then it will be well worth your money and time. And be assured, if you have problems, the company will do their best to fix you up.
Pros:- Very strong motorNeutral:- You lose the ability to have multiple front sprockets and therefore available gears but now you have a motor so.....- Depending on your bike frame this likely will need some creative modification for wiring or battery placementCons:- Definitely not a natural feeling while pedaling. The motor engages too strong when assist is on.I purchased the 44T motor with the 20ah shark battery and put it on a low end 21 speed Shimano mountain bike. There's definitely a degree of mechanical know-how that you need to do this conversion but there are enough videos showing how to remove the various components where it should be manageable for most people.For cord management I ended up using electrical tape instead of the provided zip-ties. This kept the wires cleaner and if you don't mind seeing tape can better secure it to the bike frame. There was plenty of cord provided and at times I had to wrap it around the frame a few times (I spiraled it) to take up the excess.I had to buy a few extra things to make this work. First I needed to get a tool to remove the bottom bracket (what the front sprockets attach to) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09KV4PRCF?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1. Second, the battery wouldn't fit between or underneath the frame so I had to buy a rear tire rack to mount the battery on. I did get the largest battery so I assume the others were smaller and it might not have been an issue.Once it was put together, I turned it on and the C961 display was giving me an error. The pedal assist and throttle still worked but I had no idea what assist setting it was on. I unplugged the display and everything worked normally after plugging it back in.As for the performance.....wow. The motor has a lot of torque and crushes hills. In the lowest gear (now only 7 because you replace the front sprockets) I have to be careful or the front tire wants to come off the ground. Before the conversion I could barely pedal up my driveway in the lowest gear while standing up and throwing all my weight at the pedals. After the conversion (lowest gear is now a much higher ratio than before due to losing sprockets) the bike slows but easily crawls up my driveway. That being said, as soon as you start to pedal the motor takes off even when you're on the lowest assist setting. You basically have to turn it off if you want to go slow (like in a crowded area).Overall I gave this a 4 out of 5 solely because I haven't had it for very long and also haven't been able to test the battery life or overall durability.
After researching Bafang decided to purchase one. Took about four hours for a first timer to install. Purchased the tools necessary to remove cranks and bearing assembly. Did not know the Bafang wrench came with it so I have two. Only hitch was the rear battery rack does not mount easily with rear disc brakes. Had to modify the rear rack. Bike flys! Went 5 miles city streets with minor up and down and 16 miles on a flat canal path and used 12% of my battery doing pedal assist on mostly the 2 setting. Very happy with this product. I did also install the shift sensor and that is necessary in my book to ease chain strain while shifting.
