Standard bicycle brakes rely on rod brakes or disc brakes fixed on the frame, which allows the fast rotating wheels to slow down under the friction of the brake pads. While some brake mechanisms are mounted on the frame near the upper part of the wheel, disc brakes are mounted on the center of the bike's front and rear wheels. These pause the bike by squeezing the brake pads against rotors mounted near the hub. What Is the Difference Between Mechanical Disc Brakes and Hydraulic Disc Brakes?Disc brakes are divided into two types according to different environments where they can be used and the characteristics of electric bicycles. These are mechanical and hydraulic.Mechanical Disc Brakes:Operated by cables, brake levers and mechanical discs, they are easy to use, like most rim brakes. The mechanical brake cable is filled with air by pulling the brake cable with the brake lever, then adjusting the brake caliper to squeeze the brake pads tightly against the rim and bring your e-bike to a stop.Hydraulic Disc Brakes:Pulling the brake lever in a hydraulic system moves a piston in the master cylinder which pushes the brake fluid toward the brake calipers. This acts on the pistons in the brake calipers, pushing the pads against the disc rotors. Hydraulic brakes, on the other hand, compress a special fluid when the brake lever is engaged before engaging the caliper.Hydraulic Disc BrakesThese types of brakes come with an upgraded mechanism and superior braking performance. They offer complete control over your bike and its speed. Optimal stopping power and efficiency are more benefits to enjoy from. However, these advantages also come with added costs.Hydraulic bike brakes use a wholly sealed fluid-filled braking system. The fluid serves as the replacement for regular steel cables. With these brakes, you won’t suffer from reduced control, braking power, or speed, even in unfavorable conditions. One thing mechanical and hydraulic disc brakes have in common is how they function. They both have the same effect on how an electric bike works, especially in its braking. Both types of brakes come with a brake lever which is connected to a brake caliper. Every e-bike has its brake caliper at the center of the wheel. The caliper works by applying resistance to the wheel when you press it into the rotor. This makes it harder to turn the bike, thereby slowing down the tire. The caliper applies more pressure to the rotor the harder you press the brake lever. Therefore, there is more excellent resistance, leading to added braking power. When compared to the conventional rim brakes, these disc brakes do not apply resistance to the rims. Instead, they focus more on the bike’s rotor. This way, disc brakes can perform better with very minimal friction, making them popular on moped bikes.Differences Between Mechanical and Hydraulic Disc Brakes1. Stopping PowerHydraulic disc brakes tend to produce better stopping power than their mechanical counterparts. This is due to their increased efficiency. A hydraulic brake multiplies the force you apply to squeeze the lever. That is, hydraulic bike brakes creates more braking power than you put in the system. Moreover, the brake fluid from this disc brake also produces very little friction. Hence, the energy loss in the system is much lesser. On the other hand, less force makes it from a mechanical brake lever to its caliper. The cable that runs through the brake’s housing causes friction. Some of the force applied to the brake lever helps to overcome this friction. Therefore, there is a loss of energy in the system. You may not be able to create the required stopping power. In that case, the stopping distance will be relatively longer.2. PricingMechanical brakes are cheaper than hydraulic disc brakes. Their cost of maintenance is also significantly lesser. Cables only cost a few dollars. Also, you only need to know very little about basic bike tools to perform the necessary repairs or maintenance. You don’t need to visit any expensive bike shops.Buying hydraulic disc brakes or bikes that use them is more expensive. They come as pre-bled components which are ready for use or installation. Maintaining a hydraulic disc brake is also more costly. You’ll need to bleed the brake and replace its fluid, requiring high-end tools that increase expenses.3. Control and Precision of Braking ForceA hydraulic disc brake ensures that you have greater control over your bike’s braking force. This advantage is due to the little effort needed to apply the brake. All you need to do is squeeze the lever gently for the desired amount of braking force. You won’t have to lock up the wheels before stopping faster. However, a mechanical disc brake requires more pulling force on the brake lever, making it a little hard to control the braking force. You will need to squeeze hard on the lever, making it difficult to move your hand accurately. It is possible to shed more speed at this point, translating to inefficiency.4. Parts AvailabilityIt is easier to come by spare mechanical brake parts than hydraulic brake parts. This is because mechanical disc brakes utilize the same levers and cables as the conventional rim brakes. You will find their levers and cables in pretty much any bike shop you visit, including those in remote regions. On the other hand, it is a bit harder to come by spare parts for hydraulic bike brakes. Finding replacement calipers, lever, brake fluid, brake lines, or maintenance tools may prove difficult. It may even be impossible for riders who live in remote regions. You may have to get to high-end bike shops before getting the necessary parts.5. Operation Smoothness and Braking ConsistencyThe operation of hydraulic disc brakes is smoother and more consistent. Nothing in the hydraulic brake system hangs or snags up. Thus, it will always feel smooth whenever you squeeze the lever. Also, the closed system hardly gets contaminated with dirt or debris. Therefore, you can be sure of a more predictable and consistent braking force. When the cables of mechanical disc brakes run through the housing, some form of friction occurs. Since it is an open system, contamination of the housing with dirt is more likely. There is resistance created, and the brake may feel a little less smooth. Overcoming this resistance will require you to apply more force than usual. Hence, lesser consistency in braking. Are Hydraulic Disc Brakes More Valuable Than Mechanical Brakes?Hydraulics are more valuable than mechanical disc brakes. This is because you need to put less pressure on the lever to get the same level of stopping power which means you get better modulation.Hydraulic disc brakes also provide greater stopping power because they have a larger contact area that facilitates the heat dissipation. They also rarely break down, are more reliable at high speeds and work better than mechanical brakes in wet and muddy conditions. In addition, the entire system of hydraulic disc brakes is hermetically sealed which greatly reduces the possibility of contaminants such as mud, gravel and dust entering the hydraulic system.Hydraulic brakes for your e-bike, a better choice? Yes! They can make you more confident when you’re going wild on the off-road terrains. They can help control the speed more efficiently. Moreover, you can put less effort to slow down your bike with them. Let’s see more advantages hydraulic brakes have:First, it takes you less lever effort to stop the bikeFor long distance commuting or going off-road, hydraulic brake will undoubtedly be a better choice. Not only because they can get you better stopping power, but also because mechanical disc brakes need more power to have the same effort, which will definitely make your hands tired.Second, hydraulic brakes need less maintenance as they have a closed systemGenerally speaking, a closed system requires less maintenance and so does the brake system. For a closed system, it blocks dirt and dust outside. For a mechanic brake system, it takes more effort for the maintenance routine. However, please still remember to check oil level from time to time and add some bleed fluid into the system if you found the brake lever is loosen even though hydraulic brakes need less maintenance.Third, they save time for you as they need less adjustmentsIn hydraulic brake system, there are two pads both of which move towards the rotor. Therefore, the rotor is squeezed evenly from both sides. Unlike traditional mechanical brakes which move in singular direction, there will be less bends on rotors or some dislocations for hydraulic brakes. You need to adjust the mechanical brakes frequently but most hydraulic brakes need no adjustment unless you drop your bike or there is an outer impact on your e-bike.

I purchased a Heybike for my wife for Christmas. A Heybike Cityscape. I did a fair amount of research and targeted the Heybike. It seemed like a lot of bike for the money when compared to the competition. I was so impressed with it and my wife loved it so much I decided to treat myself to the new Hey Bike Brawn. By the way she got 40 miles on the first full charge with battery life remaining, very impressive! Now back to the Brawn. It had the features I wanted as I intend to ride both on the pavement but occasionally in the woods and trails around our house. WOW I was blown away with this bike. Once again for the money the value is there. The motor is a beast with gobs of torque. I am trying to get exercise as well as have fun so I typically ride with a lower pedal assist level in a higher gear to get a little blood pumping. I also have a bad knee so the biking is great therapy for that. I really like the look and feel of this bike for me. It is a substantial bike and feels very planted in the road. The suspension is functional and I absolutely love the hydraulically controlled seat which allows you to begin the ride in a low position and raise it to a more comfortable ride height once underway. The headlight is amazing and the tail light is cool but I wish the taillight was integrated with the battery like my wife's Cityscape. Another reason I choose Heybike for our second bike is the top notch customer support. I had a question about the pedal assist software in the Cityscape and they followed up early the next day. The communication has been stellar which seems to rare in today's business environment. If you are looking at options Heybike offers about any style and power you could want. The bikes are well built, solid and a blast to ride with a customer support that is excellent! If you never tried a E bike, do it! they are fun and will inspire you to get out and ride more.
