Reviews
Below are some critical reviews about Bafang Conversion Chainring Display ElectricThe installation is rather straight-forward. I had to rework the motor bracket to tighten the screws without damaging their threads. The biggest problem however, is the flawed documentation of the controller. I ordered a C965 and the programming is very different from the menu. I am guessing this is not the only controller suffering this problem.I had to take away two stars as the customer service is incapable of answering basic questions. I had a forth and back about a spec parameter of the light output and have gotten nowhere. After explaining in a few different ways during multiple emails what I need to know (the current capability of the 6V light output) and getting answers unrelated to the question they started ignoring me entirely.Update: I added a star as I got a response: There is no spec but the best guess is that the current on the lights output is below 1A, likely in the 500mA range (headlight consumes 0.3A).
So you are buying a bundle of parts put together by the seller. So the question is, did you get all the parts you need and are they of good quality? First, no instructions were included, they did give you some QR codes so you can watch third-party installation videos. This is not a great solution as some of the videos are not great. As for parts, most were fine quality, but nothing special. They did give you some bike tools you will need but didn't include others. The ones that were included were poor quality, so you will need to buy those. Most of the other parts were Bafang parts. The battery pack seems to use Chinese cells and NOT cells from Panasonic, Sony, LG or other reputable brands the best I could tell. This is a big negative, so plan on buying another batter if you took their included battery. I got the 750C display which works, but no instructions. I believe BaFang is NOT a Chinese company, but the parts are made in China. The crank gear they give you is heavy and steal, you'll want to replace that with a Lekkie. They DON'T supply a shift sensor, which for a 1000W motor you will need. Plan $100 for the gear, and $25 for the shift sensor. They give you a thumb throttle and if you want a twist on, plan $50 more. The battery was for the downtube, so you need a very short cable to connect to the motor, but the fittings were different. Anderson connectors on one side, XT60 on the other. Good luck with that one. They give you a long extension cable which is no help. So very sloppy attention to detail. My bike had combo brakes and shifter controls. They give you new brakes with switches in them, but you may have to buy a new rear shift control. (You remove the front derailer.). Again, no mention of this in the non-existent instructions. Plan on spending several hundred dollars extra on parts not included and $500 for a better battery. Oh, battery charger they give you is very basic, add another one that stops at an 80% charge for better battery life.Overall, what I paid for this was very overpriced. With much work, the kit works well, but I did have to buy a good amount of extra pieces. I don't think this should be required for a $1300+ kit. But overall I'm happy but wouldn't buy this kit again.
Don’t pay for fast shipping. I paid and got the battery in about 10 days then waited another month or so for the motor and kit. Communication sucked and was always told just wait, but no tracking number ever provided. However, the kit itself is terrific. You really will want to install this on a newer bike or expect lots of upgrades to accommodate the speed (brakes, rotors, fork, chain, cassette, derailleur). Service sucks but motor and battery pack are great
Below are some positive reviews about Bafang Conversion Chainring Display Electric
For the most part i keep it in assist 3 and i already put very very low effort, and it can run for a long time if you re pedaling in assist 3, sometimes i want to fly so i use the assist 5, personal best 67.5 km/h so far, it can do better, unloaded it goes up to 99.9km/h (55v charge, the high rpm gets lower and lower as the voltage drops-logic), my personal best was done with heavy chains on the bike, heavy wind from the front, and thick clothes, so it can definitely go faster, but you shouldn t go faster, or use a road bike for a project like this, you ll fear that it can break in half at that speed and weight ( i have the kryptonite U lock mini and the largest chain they have+heaviest).Pros: the battery lasts a long time, very long time, even with a lot of throttle abuse and keeping it a lot in throttle without pedaling, i got 111 km on the odometer with the factory charging + another charge, (as i m writting the review i m charging it for the second time).Cons: all the complaints go to the battery, the throttle will not fit if you have a thick handlebar, i have a road bike with lowbars and i had to scoop it out (but then it wouldnt stay in one piece because the center is what keeps it together so i super glued the outside then added some hot glue on top to prevent water from entering, although water won t break it, there isn t any potentiometer, just a magnet and a sensor, that s all and i love that because it will definitely last very long), back to the battery complaints, it lasts a long but... there is no marking or instruction on it about the maximum charge, how much the usb port supplies, and the only thing is shanshan bumblebee as a model, which is weird and never heard of before, you can t really ride in the rain because of the battery, i got caught in the rain twice, water gets into the red kill switch and it will provide current even if the switch is on off, it s kinda stupid when you think that the motor is waterproof and so it s the display and all the other things, but it still works, i m just worried more water can get inside and damage it for good ( i shall open it one day and seal it with some good silicone).DPC 18: many people complain about the display not holding the time, it does, and it does very well, you know why? somehow the motor/controler holds up a good amount of charge from the battery (14v or so) put a multimeter on the motor s wires while disconnected, you ll see i m not lying, also, my light stays on for a few seconds to prove this theory, while the battery is out. The controler kills the power at 41v, unfortunately sometimes at 43v, although it can still provide enough power to keep you going for another 20 km or so but less fast, it should be up to us, in case of emergency maybe we want to use those extra volts, and charge it when we don t need, when we see 41v then we can charge, but you charge at 41-43 anyway cause it s limited. (it can be changed with a programming cable but i won t do that anytime soon, for now i ll leave it the way it is, i d like to tweak the throttle full power in all asist modes, cause when you need it... better have it, not having to switch to pas 5 first to get the max powaaaaaaaah from the throttle). anway, maybe in the future. Forgot about the display, i get lost in excitement so i have to come back to the same thing, the voltage is VERY ACCURATE, if you get 48 v as you re supposed to, it works, tested with a multimeter before and after putting the battery on a couple of times, the speedometer is also pretty accurate, shows +/- 1km/h compared to my gps speed. The chainring: is not as bad as people cry about, 111 km and it fell only 3 times, that s because i go fast or shift while the bike runs over bumps which makes the chain move sideways and oh well.... it s not as bad.Would be nice if they included a wrench for the bottom bracket, you re stuck using a pipe wrench otherwise. And you can use my idea of adding those brackets to keep it from wiggling up and down all the time, cause nothing can tighten it so good to keep it from moving up and down.Back to the battery complain i remembered...(see video) it makes a squeaky noise while on small bumps, or uneven road (it s ny so it squeaks all the way non stop), the plastic from the battery is wiggly up and down and it grinds against the plastic that it stands on. I have the headphones in most of the time so... not that big deal breaker there either, but i liked the idea of keeping the battery in the back and not giving up on my bottle holders, it s less obvious that it s electric this way, cause everyone keeps the battery in the middle (which is good for stability) but i liked that this one also has a rear light into it so no worries of extra wires.I ll add a video of the build in the meanwhile on my youtube (working on it) my channel's name is MihailZX if you want to see all the trouble i had building it.update on the battery: found out that the shanshan company makes just the cases of the battery, they do not make the whole thing, it s more for diy projects, it s an empty box that you can fill with (using proper knowledge on how to) battery cells and build your own battery pack. It s pretty neat but i m skeptical about who might ve made this, it could have been just someone like me and you, but anyway, there aren t really companies that make batteries specifically for this voltage, most of them are made out of samsung cells 18650 put together by someone in china, no overheat during charging or heavy usage so i guess they knew what they were doing... On some site i found that they promise for the same battery 1000 charging cycles minimum so... given that i can squeeze 60 km on a full charge that gives us a total of 60 000 km of life, which is good.... if you can charge it 1000 times and not lose any of the capacity, other batteries say that 500 is the limit but with larger capacity comes longer life-from what i ve heard/researched.
This is a "badass" motor. I used to have 350W ebike and this bike left that bike to dust. Awesome. The kit came in two shipments as the battery came in via Fedex Ground. They asked me to provide the feedback so here you go.1. Installation:Pros:-There are lot of videos online showing how to disassemble your bike and install with the kit and it took me about 3hrs to complete the kit with brake sensors, throttle, 750C display, and Headlight. Everything seems to require no technical to install it.-Cons:-Not much technical detail how thing work and completely depend on people experiences online to learn about the kit.2. Performance:-Pros: this bike is so powerful and i believe all the default setting get you about 75% of the power but you can google online to crank it up to 100%-Cons: too powerful so you have to be careful on the road. My stock setup allow me to run to ~25-28mph using PAS level 4 average including hills in Seattle.3. Customer service:-Pros: They respond very fast, and promptly and promise to reimburse the shift level as I did not realize it is not included in the kit as standard.-Cons: still to be determined if they keep their promise. 8/25. Customer service very useful and the kept their promise. They helped with orders support, helped to exchange the unit when I found an issue detailed in the next section. Very good communication AA++++4. Technical support:-Pros: their after sale technical support seems to be knowledgeable with the kit but not the new display. I have an issue with the 750C display only show between 76%-85% when the charger fully charged the battery. They promise to look into it and get back...Update 8/25. They provided the shipping label to send the unit back, they found the unit need new firmware update so they replaced me with new unit. Installed it on my bike and everything seems to work great after that. Great service and Communication.. AAA++++Cons: No Cons. Like the customer support as well..Despite the minor technical issues, the kit delivers its promise for a powerful ebike.4. Down tube battery vs rack batteryI have heard lot of people saying the down tube provide better balance because all weight is low and center to the bike. I understand the explanation but my bike has small frame so the down tube will be in place of my water bottle so I am glad that i pick out the rack version of the battery for the convenient of the bottle water.
I've only had my kit installed a couple of weeks and we've had a run of bad weather but I've been able to get out on a couple of rides now that included some gravel mountain roads and single track trails and I am having a blast! I'm able to ride up hills that given my current physical fitness level I would not be doing otherwise. I'm getting used to the extra weight on the bike and it's becoming less of an issue for handling.Seller was super responsive and worked fast to get me a new kit after the shipper lost the first one. Every question or issues I've had they have been great to work with and typically responded to my messages in less than a day.I installed the motor kit on a Diamondback El Oso Uno and it went okay, there were some things to figure out. Now that it's all installed it's working great.I ordered the 100mm bottom bracket, and it works but because the bike supports up to a 5" tire the rear triangle (chain & seat stays) are wider than some bikes. This made it so I had to space the motor to the right (drive) side more than anticipated. The extra spacing made it so I can't use the second lock ring on the left side, it's holding but I'm checking it frequently, I'll probably add some loctite here soon once I'm confident in everything staying put. If I knew this before hand I would have ordered the 120mm bottom bracket. This also made it so I had to space the bolts on the left side that mound the motor to the mounting plate.Because of the bottom bracket spacing issue the chain line is less than optimal, but it works. I used an old reflector bracket mounted to the chainstay and a clamp to make a chain guide to make sure the chain runs onto the front chain ring in a straight line no matter what gear I'm in; it's only the lower gears (larger on back) that cause the bad angle.Power is amazing! I got the 52V 14.5 amph batter and am loving it. I see the motor hit 1300+ watts of power at times, it's amazing! This thing will pull me up some amazingly steep hills on throttle only.Range is still unknown, however, I've been on a couple of 12 mile rides and still had around 50V left, the computer estimates the range and it fluctuates a lot depending on how steep the road/trail and how much I pedal. I feel like I could get close to 30 miles on mostly flat terrain and about 20 miles on some serious hills. We'll see, I'll update once I know.I would definitely recommend this kit to anyone with some technical and mechanical know how, otherwise I'd suggest you get someone to do the install for you, there's some things that are not simply plug-n-play.
