Below are some critical reviews about Ortlieb Back Roller Panniers Various PatternsWould be a great product if it wasn't for the difficulty in closing it and loss of usable space. You can only fill the bag about halfway because the only way to latch the clasps is the roll half the bag down so the hardware can latch together. They should have made the straps much longer, to allow for the bag to hold more.
Seller "Matt Deals" shipped a defective bag so I can't give all that thorough of a review. One of the clips that fastens the bag to the bike was snapped in 2 rendering it useless. I suppose this speaks to the quality and sturdiness of the bag. Also provides insight to the type of service provided by Matt Deals.
I thought that buying Ortlieb panniers would be my reliable biking bag for years to come, but they broke within a few months of light use. The plastic handles snapped right off leaving me stranded on my commute home. I'm always very careful about not overstuffing these bags to not stress the bag/rack too much, but they still broke regardless. Do not buy these!

I had a previous set of Ortieb city front rollers that I used as small rear panniers for overnight mountain bike camping, and lowed the durable simplicity so much that I purchased these larger panniers to add some storage space when I converted my old mountain bike into an electric bike commuter. These are absolutely waterproof and they will remain waterproof after hard use. Ortlieb panniers are expedition quality. A fair amount of design went into making these panniers easy to remove and reinstall. The emphasis is entirely on convenience, but unfortunately, that makes it very easy for thieves. For my permanent installation, I needed to modify them to prevent their easy removal. It wasn't that difficult to do, but it is something to consider when purchasing these excellent panniers. I wish Ortlieb provided a standard attachment system that allowed these panniers to be permanently mounted to prevent casual theft, as well as an easy on and off method of attachment. The attachment method is secure in the sense that these panniers will not fall off, even during aggressive mountain bike trail riding, but it's not secure in the sense that a thief can lift up on the carry strap and walk away with your expensive panniers and their contents.
Confession, I have not actually used these in the rain yet, but they certainly seem like they should be resistant enough.The Ortlieb line of panniers is pretty legendary and now that I have them it's easy to see why. The material is tough and well assembled but the real star is the Quick Lock mounting system. As some have said, it's not secure from a theft standpoint, but the ability to just drop the bags onto the rack (More or less) and know they won't fall off is a nice feature and since you can just pick up the bags and walk away, you probably should whenever leaving your bike., because someone else could detach them just as easily. I think this particular pair might be a bit large for the average commuter unless you carry a fair bit of stuff. My first use was to pack everything for a four day weekend trip and it fit pretty easily (This was not a camping trip and food wasn't packed either but there was plenty of room for four days of clothing, spare shoes, etc. ). Overall, a great buy, would totally buy again (but probably won't have too).
Wide clips allowed me to hook this on a very non-standard rack. I'm talking about the distance between the clips that attach to the rack. I have a white bike and these are the only white panniers I could find. The are beautiful. Hopefully they are as strong as they look. I'll report back here if they're not.
