Below are some critical reviews about Mongoose Beginner Featuring Lightweight TectonicBought this cause I couldn't find a beginner XL race bike under $300. For the price the frame is great. Good geometry and stiff. Made of 6061 Aluminium. The bad...Hi ten forks and bars make front end heavy. Brakes are garbage and swapped with a set of tekro linears. Swapped seat post with a 350 mm aluminum FMF along with an Oval concepts race saddle. Tires are great for this price point. They will go up too 100psi. I run them at 80 to 85. The wheel hoops are decent made by exposure and are double wall. Problem is the hubs are very cheap and unsealed. I have creaking in the rear wheel and will swap with a set of sealed Skyway Mags soon. Cranks are surprisingly strong and stiff. Will keep them on but steel sprocket needs to go. Bottom bracket is cheap but works fine. Freewheel is also no name but works fine, may swap with an ACS once I get the mags.All in all its a great "Starter" race bike and has potential to be great once you swap the componets.UPDATE: 8/19/20Now have had the bike about a week and only a handful of laps done on it. Sprocket is trashed. Stressed at the crank bolt and warping. Rear wheel and freewheel trashed. Hubs are hollowing out in the rear amd will not stay tight. Chain is junk. I'm 180lbs and should handle me fine. Such junk componets its not funny. I just ordered $260 worth of parts just to get this bike up to par and able to ride with out worry of safety. Like I said before...only good is the frame and tires.
The suggested height is 4'6" to 5'1". My daughter is EXACTLY 4'6". When on the bike, with the seat at it's highest setting (just barely covering the minimum insertion marker on seat post) her knee is at a 45 degree angle when the pedal is closest to the ground and her knee goes above the handlebars when she pedals. You would think that, since she is the minimum recommended height, that if anything she would be too small for the back. Yet, as the minimum rec commended height, the bike is way too small for her. Just assembled it yesterday but the return window is already closed.Although the bike well made and gorgeous, and was packaged extremely professionally, I must give only one star because I bought a bike that can never be used. Had it fit her, I would have given it five stars.
I bought a Title pro thinking it's appropriate for a 5' kid. But it looks very small. I definitely wish I would have gone with some other model with 24'' tires.If you look at the videos, the seat post is extremely low. Moreover, the saddle is fixed, can't be adjusted and it is tilted at a weird angle. Maybe this bike is designed for some very specific use case, but not that good for a general purpose bike for a kid.

To preface, I grew up in the bicycle business. My family owned a chain of bike shops, even sold Mongoose back when it was BMX Products. Except for the seat/seat-post combo. I live this bike. It is well build, well spec'ed and pretty lightweight. You could do some entry-level racing on it (as I was hoping to get my daughter into).It assembled easily and is of bicycle shop quality.The seat/seat-post combo, although it could have been a decision about weight savings and race-ready brings about the same problem that one-piece systems always have. the angle has to be perfect for you or it stinks. It is good for race-day, and why I didn't knock any stars off, but as a product manager on a sub-$200 unit, I would have gone with a traditional clamp.
After watching crazy Al Cayne's review of this bike 100 times( thanks Al for the great review!!), I finally decided to buy it.First impressions...the bike was packed EXTREMELY well!90% assembled so no need to take it to a bike shop.Read the manual, it contains important and helpful information.As for performance, the bike is light, smooth, and FAST!!I took the decals off, and the bike looks just SICK!If you've been reading/watching reviews about this bike, don't hesitate like I did.Buy it!Thanks again to Crazy Al for his review.And thanks to Amazon for the great customer service and fast shipping.Cool runnings!
We now have 3 of these, a junior, a pro xl, and a pro 24" cruiser and all 3 of them are absolutely fantastic bikes. We race all 3 every weekend and its so awesome that we were able to get the family involved for less than $1000. Mongoose really did something awesome here. Looking into a title pro elite now.
