Reviews

Below are some positive reviews about BAFANG Wheel Ebike Conversion Controller

I installed this on an old Trek bike.Pros - Works great. I opted for the color screen. Once everything is installed it's powerful and reliable. They are THE "brand name" manufacturer for these systems, so the parts are high quality.Cons - There are basically no instructions. They have a link to a video that is worthless. Your best bet is to search Youtube for assembly help. Even then, every bike is slightly different, so you will run into problems you'll need to solve. The whole process took days of solving one issue after another. I'll list some below. The other odd quirk is that it comes with a light, but there is no information about how to turn it on. There is a wire plug connection, but no method anywhere to turn it on. We found the online manual, which helps understand the screen controls, but no information about the light. We also discovered a site that gave us the secret code to access the hidden screen menu to change some settings - still no light information.A few potential hurdles:The wheel they send is not really designed to be used for rim braking. It's got very smooth surfaces. That means converting an older bike to rear disc brakes. This is a powerful motor and stopping safely will save your life. My older bike did not have disc brake attachment points, so I needed adapters, so do some research since some adapters are hard to find and hard to install. The wheel did not come with all the spacers I needed to mount it on my frame. There are some thick washers and spacers you may need, and that may mean a trip to a bike shop that knows about e-bike parts. The wheel does not have any cassette gearing. You'll need to buy a cassette. My cassette needed an adapter for this wheel, again something I had to track down since the cassette didn't come with it, and the wheel didn't come with it. If you can by a Bafang wheel with a cassette you'll save time and money. The cassette also required a special Park Tool to install the cassette due to the electric wheel axle size and depth. Not all Park Tools will fit this axle. Luckily a local bike shop had one. There are many wires, and while its very clear how to connect them, there is no real example shown of how to install them on the bike frame. I used a small narrow bike bag mounted inside the frame to hide the wires. You basically have to figure this out on your own. This does not come with a battery, and the battery holder they provide did not match the water bottle cage holes on my older bike. My frame holes were too high along the tube, so we had to add one new lower frame hole for an additional bolt. Many bike shops will not do that since it may compromise the frame. You need a special tool to install that additional threaded hole.It turned out great, and is cheaper than a new e-bike. If you don't have some skill working on bikes, or don't want to learn and enjoy the challenge - either don't get one of these kits, or have a shop build it for you.

Background: I purchased this for my 14 year old son for a Christmas gift. He loves it! It seemed to take him about 3 to 4 hours to assemble but that included learning how to take off the rear cassette and a couple of trips to the bike store. The ride itself is very zippy and fun. I can't speak to longevity because we haven't had it long enough. The materials are all of high quality. It took 12 days to deliver to California. One thing to note if your bike has hydraulic breaks: In the Q&A section for this product, the company recommended purchasing this SQUARE set of sensors which is incorrect: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C24RK65/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1.The CORRECT connections for hydraulic breaks are actually this ROUND set of sensors: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M0LWFYM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (Purchase this link if your bike also has hydraulic breaks and you're using this motor kit).

Very nice and fun. It is very light, compare to the old motor back to 2010 and the batteries pack is much smaller. I convert my son’s 20 years old bike as commuter bike. I was planed to install the battery on the top tube( 15.5”), but the batteries is too long (16-“) then I modified the rear rack to carry batteries (reinforce support for rack ((aluminum tubing is available from the Home Depot)), enlarge screws holes for batteries bracket etc.) Material wise the manufacturer need to call their supplier (sub contractor) to beef up their product (controlor case), we have very cold winter this year in New York ( lower 20- degrees F). 3 days the controller case bracket got busted, as I anticipated I installed additional strap to hold the case in place.Head light is very powerful and bright, but it is also the batteries drainer. I rather use as back up and use regular bicycle head light.Word of caution for everyone, this 500w motor is very powerful. It is equivalent to 2/3 house power. When you stop for traffic lights on uphill, leave the power assist to 0 (zero). The first day of my riding, the front wheel lift off from the road (like the wild horse in rodeo) then I was tipped over.Over all this is so much fun and powerful motor, highly recommend for bike lover, energy conservative, who hate got stuck in traffics during the holiday like me. Ride safe everyone.
